"Dos à Dos" with Isabelle Vandenabeele at Kornél

Isabelle Vandenabeele and Ephameron, two renowned Flemish visual storytellers, challenged each other to make a book together. They made up a – possibly – fictive tale that leads from one character to the next, each beginning from a selfportrait and ending with the other’s. An intriguing starting point that led to surprising results that can be read from front to back and back to front.

Welcome to the book presentation of the wonderful “Dos à Dos”, paralleled by a dual exhibition by both authors.

New 2: "In one hand a Ghost, the other an Atom"

The last leg of my American trip in December will be to fly to San Francisco for the show opening of New2's solo exhibition. Sharing a studio with the amazing Australian artist, I have seen all of the artworks being crafted from up close. His intricately detailed papercut abstract lettering has awed me from day one: the amount of time and patience the guy puts into each piece is just astounding. So all of you from the Bay Area, you know what to do!

Group show at Comma Festival - Perugia, Italy

My husband Brendan and I had an amazing time last month in Perugia, Italy. I was there on an artist residency to work on a group show at the Palazzo della Penna museum for the Comma festival. This is what the result of a whole week of working non-stop looks like - we even kind of missed out on enjoying the beautiful weather and amazing food :)

The festival ended last week but hopefully I'll be able to show the installation again sometime, somewhere.

"Water"- mural at Coney Island

As some of you may have noticed on Facebook, with a little help from my better half I've done a 20 meter-long, water-themed mural in Coney Island, New York last month. Thanks to No Longer Empty and with moral support from Veng and OverUnder painting just around the corner of the same fence, we finished the job in 10 hours - I still can't believe it. Make sure to stop by if you're in the neighbourhood in the few coming months - if you're not and you'd like to see some footage of the making of, check this link!

"Bubbles" - silkscreen print

Check out this new silkscreen poster printed by ttdmrt and published by Nexus gallery in Reims, France, where I had a big solo show a few months ago and many great adventures. It's a two-colour, 50x70cm poster on heavy paper, limited edition of 30 pieces, signed and dated, and costs only 50 euros plus shipping. Email me if you're interested!

"Clash" by Anneke Caramin, Ephameron & Kim Troubleyn

After three years of designing the brochure covers, bimonthly installations and special gifts for culture centre De Kern in Wilrijk, Belgium, Kim Troubleyn and I thought the time was ripe to present you with an overview of what we've done so far. Along with Anneke Caramin, whose illustrations for community centre Nova in the Kiel neighbourhood didn't go unnoticed, we decided to organize an artists-in-residence clash with a selection of the best of what we've made and more. You're more than welcome to come check out the results at Nova, open during office hours and performances at the culture bar!

Ephameron x MartHa!tentatief

What would you do when a brilliant theatre company approaches you to draw 100 pictures for their newest play? In February, Ephameron stars in a new chapter of her career performing on stage with the Antwerp-based MartHa!tentatief, well-known for their inventive, experimental and personal theatre pieces. Using her drawings as the actors and backdrop, the story is based around who passes through a certain park in a certain big city. Because there's park people and there's vacation people, and people who can't afford vacations will spend their free time at the park. Poles, jews, joggers, unfriendly ladies with friendly dogs, and who knows, maybe even you?

Shan Jiang at Lockwood

The young and talented graphic artist Shan Jiang draws sensitive lines and combines these in strong compositions which he digitally colours in. The modern elements and urban landscapes the artist uses in his illustrations are populated by immensely detailed and sometimes manga-inspired characters, people and animals in a breathtaking combination of lines, forms and colours. He focusses on figurative images to which each viewer can add their own meaning from their own visual life experience.

Shan Jiang grew up in Shanghai, a city in the South-East of China that is based on the contradiction between skyscrapers and bungalows, contemporary concepts and traditional superstition, communist ideologies and growing subcultures. He studied fine arts at the local university, then went on for a second degree at the Edinburgh College of Art in Scotland. In 2005, he started working for graphic design company ILoveDust in South England. He has worked for clients like Miller beer, Nike, Levi’s and Coca Cola Zero and has been creating a children’s book as well.

Spring 2010

Hi to all!

It's a busy few weeks so I thought I'd post some images and dates about upcoming shows for you... If you’d like to stay informed about all the latest news, just hook up on Facebook on my fanpage!

First of all, some space for friends.

In Antwerp at Mekanik Strip, this Friday April 16 from 18h, Bfree / Merijn Hos and Morcky are teaming up for a double show and signing their new fantastic books published by Buzzworks. On top of that, Modart is presenting their first book as well. The show’s running only until April 26, so you’ve got to think fast!

Meanwhile at Avenue, our dear Marcus Oakley is currently showing off his talents in a bewildering and colourful solo show, a must-see for those of you who missed him at Art Trek last summer. Running until May 13...

16/04-25/04: Bfree and Morcky at Mekanik
31/03-13/05: Marcus Oakley at Avenue

Then on to my own publicity :)
There’s a couple of interesting shows coming up, so here’s an update:

I’ll be working at Kartell all weekend to finish a giant tape drawing installation on the windows of their Brussels flagship store entitled “Everything in Between”. It will be visible throughout the Art Brussels fair, April 21 until May 2, and is open 24/7, so come on down whenever you’re in the neighbourhood.

Also, I’m collaborating with fellow illustrative artists Brecht Vandenbroucke, Hannelore Van Dijck and Ward Zwart on a group show called “Thumb Wars” at Plan B in Bruges running from May 1 until 31, juxtaposing our different styles and techniques in a visual battle! Check out the flyer with image by the amazing Ward Zwart and my own typography.

21/04-02/05: “Everything in Between”, installation
01/05-31/05: “Thumb Wars”, group show

Since 2008, Kim Troubleyn and I have been collaborating with culture centre De Kern in Wilrijk near Antwerp. Every two months, we set up an art installation and produce matching multiples for visitors of their events, like Valentine’s day cards, match boxes, movie handkerchiefs, postcards, stickers,... Any time you visit, there’s something to see in the building that we made so don’t be shy and come on by!

For all you t-shirt lovers, there’s a new design on its way: after being hatched for years, it’s finally coming out on Friday May 14 at 18h at (who else) streetwear store Avenue. The Ephameron x Avenue collaboration will be available in a limited edition of black and white t-shirts for men, and in a super limited edition in blue for boys and purple for girls. Don’t hesitate or you’ll be late...

2008-2011: Kim & Ephameron at cc De Kern
14/05-31/06: Ephameron x Avenue t-shirt launch

More exciting news: thanks to popular demand, the “Ebb and Flow” group exhibition at cc Ter Dilft in Bornem will run a week longer, until April 30! So there’s even more time to enjoy the works of Anke Feuchtenberger, Cody Hudson, Hedof, Ephameron, Nigel Peake and Thomas Mazzarella. With a free 48 page catalogue for every visitor...

27/03-30/04: “Ebb and Flow” group show at cc Ter Dilft in Bornem

And last but not least, some more future plans: I’m contributing to a group show in Paris with Pictoplasma called “Pen to Paper” at Galerie LJ, running from May 1 until 26 / Galerie van der Mieden is taking me to the Amsterdam Art fair which runs from May 26 until 30 / Another show in Amsterdam called “Ladies First” is approaching, opening on May 27 and featuring girls only / Art Trek 7 looks delicious already and will open on July 31, while best buddy Louis Reith is working hard on its portfolio book (shhh! Top Secret!) / I’m finishing a comic book that is to be published by Bries this fall after 3 years of hard work / and many more to come

Loads of things to look forward to!
Hope to see you soon,
Eva

Fall 2009

Hello everyone!

I’ve taken some time to put a little Ephameron news together for you, so here goes - take a deep breath and...

If you’re in the Antwerp area, come on by Mekanik Strip tomorrow, Saturday October 2 from 14-18h where I’ll be signing my books Found+Lost and Love/Pain. Or if you’re around Eindhoven for the Dutch Design Week, make sure to check out Paper Zoo, an exhibition by 5 young artists at MU that I contributed to with a giant silkscreened cardboard installation - it’s running until Sunday, October 25. There’s some pretty impressive stuff, so go visit...

24/10: book signing at Mekanik / until 25/10: group show in Eindhoven

Summer’s over and it has been mighty busy, putting together my first Brussels solo show at Alice Gallery, organizing the sixth Art Trek event at Mekanik Strip in Antwerp, travelling to Saint Louis to work on a publication with Dubble Dutch Editions and then off to Chicago for my exhibition at the Believe Inn - making friends for life, collaborating with and meeting new people, which was the best ever... Pictures will be online soon so check back in the Ephacation folder on my website!

So now it’s back to school, and this time I’m taking it literal again: I’ve started teaching at my old art college and am super stoked about it... And talking about life changes, I also got married this month, so from now on you can call me Mrs Chivers, hoorray :)

I should also make some publicity for a few Ephameron products that came out this year. I’ve worked with Buzzworks to create this special necklace pendant (35mm high), inspired by the Arabic hamsa. It sits in a nicely designed box and is yours for only 9 euros! Next to that, my publisher Bries also launched a 12x17cm, 2 colour silkscreen print that comes with the purchase of my last book, Found+Lost, for only 3euros extra... Or if you’d like to buy it seperately, a mere 5 euros will do. It’s a limited edition, so don’t hesitate!

Buzzworks jewellery, € 9 / Bries silkscreen print, € 5 or € 3

As for the future, you can expect a classy group show at Galerie van der Mieden in Antwerp opening up on December 3, a second year of collaborations with Kim Troubleyn at culture centre De Kern in Wilrijk, a mural for Subwalk’s 2nd birthday party on November 13 in Arnhem, my installation Secrets popping up in shopping mall Den Tir in Hoboken, thanks to culture centre Nova, from November 12 on, and last but not least from November 27 a group show in Lille organized by 100Pression. With many more projects to follow...

And if you don't know them yet, definitely check out artist collective No New Enemies which I'm proudly part of. NNE is a non-profit network that supports emerging artists and organizes projects all over the world...

Until next time!

Atsuko Ishii at Avenue

I've organised this show by Japanese illustrator Atsuko Ishii last week - she makes brilliant and endearing etchings that she handprints meticulously, one by one. Come on down if you're in the neighbourhood!

ATSUKO ISHII - SOLO SHOW
JULY 4 UNTIL AUGUST 8

AT AVENUE
WHEN - Mon-Fri: 12-18h - Sat: 10-18h
WHERE - Lange Klarenstraat 29-31 - Antwerp
www.avenuestore.be

Japanese illustrator Atsuko Ishii (°1979, Osaka) lives and works in Paris, where she records daily life in her colourful and handprinted etchings. Her technique is very traditional but precise and underlines the poetic universe she creates with delicately drawn portraits, animals, objects and words. Ishii’s first solo show in Belgium shows almost 200 small and large artworks that are presented playfully in the sneaker boutique, and sold at incredibly low prices. Take them all home!
