Shan Jiang at Lockwood

The young and talented graphic artist Shan Jiang draws sensitive lines and combines these in strong compositions which he digitally colours in. The modern elements and urban landscapes the artist uses in his illustrations are populated by immensely detailed and sometimes manga-inspired characters, people and animals in a breathtaking combination of lines, forms and colours. He focusses on figurative images to which each viewer can add their own meaning from their own visual life experience.

Shan Jiang grew up in Shanghai, a city in the South-East of China that is based on the contradiction between skyscrapers and bungalows, contemporary concepts and traditional superstition, communist ideologies and growing subcultures. He studied fine arts at the local university, then went on for a second degree at the Edinburgh College of Art in Scotland. In 2005, he started working for graphic design company ILoveDust in South England. He has worked for clients like Miller beer, Nike, Levi’s and Coca Cola Zero and has been creating a children’s book as well.
